Vision Conference 2012

Hi Everybody,

The ELEBCIS project has had a great opportunity to pitch up at the Vision 2012 Conference at Paintworks. We were lucky to be able to meet many industry insiders and get their opinions of level entry employment.

We video recorded a few people to get their responses and some of the most frequent points that came up are:

1. Its WHO you know, not WHAT you know (This is something that is being said time and time again)

2. ''We would love to take on a level entry position but we don't have the room'' - wither this be a financial issue or a environment issue, its understandable that a company with as little as 2 people will find it a struggle taking on a new starter.

3. People aren't selling themselves correctly. This makes a lot of sense as you can imagine alot of people sending cv's to companies to try and get ANY job they can.

i think that targeting employers will help us get a better grasp of why there are barriers in place preventing Entry Levellers getting into a company

I'm Back

Hi Everyone,

Sorry i havent posted in a while. It wasnt because i wasn't doing anything but because i did a bit and stalled at writing it on here.

So what have i been upto in the last 2 weeks:

- I attended a great training day at Knowle West Media Centre which was hosted by Creative Skill Set (http://www.creativeskillset.org/) where we met with people between 16-25 who wanted to develop their skills to help them gain an entry level role in the Media Industry. We looked at how to construct a good C.V and also were able to speak with some industry people who have been involved with Media or the last 4 years. This was a great opportunity to network with 'insiders' and get our name out there. It also proved that there are many ways to meet industry people and that events hosted at Knowle West Media Centre can benefit anyone with Media career aspirations.

- During the above training day i was able to meet 16 year old filmmaker; Harrison Dowling who shares his films and opinions on his Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/harrisondowlingfilms .I was able to record an interview with Harrison for the ELEBCIS Project where i asked him about his opinions of getting into the Media industry and from what he told me ,lack of advertisement for roles is his concern. This made me think, how many Media roles are actuall advertised and how many are just word of mouth? Is it really Who you know not What you know?

- Day 2 of the Skill Set training was very cool. We got to go see the Bottle Yard Studios in Whitchurch and was given a tour of the set of Sky One comedy ;Trollied. We were then taken to BBC Studios and given a tour of the points west studio and were even able to make our own Radio Drama (ended up more like a comedy). It was a great day and the best bit might of been the BBC canteen..yumm

Had a great day today discussing Entry Level employment in the Creative media industry. I will be uploading my thoughts about the day tomorow.

In other news:

I have started working for Knowle West Media Centre as a researcher/interview for the ELEBCIS project. If you havent guessed by now ELEBCIS stands for Entry Level Employment in Bristols Creative Industry Sector (try saying that fast)

The role will involve gathering young peoples opinions of the media industry (by means of recording interviews) and then using this collected data to get a better understanding of the problems young people face. The collected data will have a impact on Bristols Enterprise zone at Temple Quay and how support can be given and opportunities accessed.
